ATV? UTV? Side-by-side? What’s the difference?
ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles):
Also known as quad bikes or four-wheelers
Typically designed for a single rider who straddles the seat
Usually controlled with handlebars, like a motorcycle
Generally smaller and more maneuverable than UTVs
Commonly used in farming, particularly for tasks like mustering livestock
Subject to specific safety regulations in New Zealand due to high accident rates
UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles):
Also called side-by-sides or ROVs (Recreational Off-highway Vehicles)
Larger than ATVs, with a side-by-side seating configuration
Usually have a steering wheel and pedals, more like a car
Often equipped with a cargo bed for hauling materials
Can typically carry multiple passengers
Generally considered safer than ATVs due to roll cages and seat belts
Used in agriculture, but also popular for recreational off-roading

The Tuatara has often been compared to the 1950s Land Rover or even the Willys Jeep, and we’re happy with those comparisons. In fact, in terms of where it will go, we’re sure that the Tuatara would be a match for either.
If it’s a steep climb to be tackled, there’s no need to get a run on. Just apply a low gear, and the Tuatara ATV vehicle will use its big fat high-grip tyres and differential lock on each axle, if needed, to casually climb to the top.
But it’s not just its capability and all-steel design that invites the comparison with these two off-road icons of the past. It’s also the simple engineering design of the Tuatara and its ease of access for servicing. You can do a lot of servicing or save big by taking the Tuatara straight to their local garage.
